A Fairfield man has admitted killing Liverpool mum Maxine Showers but has denied her murder.

Micheal Williams, 29, of Hinton Street, this morning pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ms Showers.

The plea was not accepted by prosecutors and the 29-year-old will now stand trial for murder.

He was charged after the body of Ms Showers, 42, was discovered by a member of the public in a locked alleyway between Hinton Street and Parton Street in Fairfield at around 8am on Monday, September 28 last year.

A post-mortem examination found Ms Showers died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Williams, with short blonde hair and wearing a white polo shirt and jeans, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today via video link from HMP Liverpool.

He spoke only to confirm his personal details and enter his pleas during a brief hearing.

Williams pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted manslaughter by accepting responsibility for the “unlawful killing” of Ms Showers.

Some of Ms Shower’s family cried out in the public gallery as the defendant entered his pleas.

John McDermott, QC, prosecuting, said: “The plea tended to manslaughter is not acceptable and the prosecution will proceed.”

He said a trial had been set for March 21, with an estimated length of 10 days.

Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, remanded Williams in custody.

After her death Ms Showers’ family paid tribute to the “kind, caring and loving mum”, who they said lived for her children.
